Pregnancy After Cone Biopsy: Recovery & Timeline

Question
I am 29 years old and was diagnosed with Carcinoma in Situ.  I had a cold knife cone biopsy at the end of September (2009) with clear margins.  I am aware that cervical incompetence is a risk of cone biopsy.  I am curious, is there a certain amount of time that I should wait to get pregnant?  Will the cervix get stronger with time or the longer I wait the better the chance I won't have an issue with carrying a baby?

Thank you for any answer you can provide.

Answer
Dear Deborah

The consequences of cone biopsy on pregnancy do not decrease by time meaning that the uterus do not get stronger with time. However, the effects depend on the extent of cone and the gynecologist who perform the surgery is the best one to determine these consequences. E.g. small cone may cause a preterm delivery at 34 weeks but an extensive cone may precipitate delivery at 28 weeeks. The normal duration of full term pregnancy is 40 weeks.

The optimal duration you should wait before you get pregnant after cone biopsy is not determined in literature but; since the procedure is not a major one and do not involve opening the uterine cavity, a period of 6 months may be good enough. Examination, however, is mandatory for accurate assessment of the condition before taking the decision of pregancy.

Good Luck
