QuestionI have been on depo for two years and my shot runs out in January and my husband and i are wanting to have another baby how long can it take to get pregnant i've read alot of stuff that says we might have alot of trouble is this true?
AnswerDear Rachel,
The issue with Depo Provera isn't TECHNICALLY the return of fertility. It is the return of normal menstrual cycles. Many, many women have a heck of a time getting their menstrual cycles to return to normal. Thus - fertility may suffer in the process.
On average, normal menstrual cycles should return in about 5-6 months after the last Depo shot, but it is not that unusual for women to report it being 12 months. Once normal menstrual cycles return, fertility should theoretically be the same as it would be after using oral contraceptives or IUDs.
I have heard and read the same types of complaints regarding infertility issues following Depo Provera use that you mentioned. However, it's hard to know whether those women would have had infertility issues anyway AND there are many who have been on Depo Provera who have gotten pregnant within a year of discontinuing use without problems that are never heard from.
So - it will very much be a personal situation for you. You can't base the results you will have on anyone else's. I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you fantastic luck in your endeavor! Have a happy Christmas season!
