Navigating Pregnancy After Infant Loss: A Support Guide

Question
Hi Kristy. I really hope you can help me on this one. I recently had a baby girl Aug. 23, 2006, but she passed away due to being born too early @ 18wks thanks to an incompetent cervix. I am 8wks pp now, I was bleeding heavily for 2wks, then everything started to lighten up, but never stopped. The Dr. however, prescribed me Aviane at my 3wk pp check-up. I was advised to use backup methods, such as condoms, for a month. After 2wks of taking the bcp, me and my fiance resumed sex without backup methods. Dr said I could've ovulated within that time and that I could've gotten pregnant. For the last couple of weeks I've been feeling nauseated (no vomiting), dizzy, urinating frequently, increased body temperature, erect nipples, breasts enlarging, and a slight increase in appetite. The past couple of days though, I've started to get cold-like symptoms. Runny/stuffy nose, coughing, bodyache, etc..I remember getting this a couple of weeks prior to my last pregnancy. The Dr did a urine test on me at my 7wk pp checkup, but it was negative. He did advise me to wait another 2 to 3wks from that.
Being impatient, I took a hpt about 5days later, only to have a negative. My fiance' has a strong feeling that I am, so does my brother. I feel anxious to know already. Could I really have gotten pregnant in that time frame? That would've been between 5 and 6wks that I had sexual intercourse without backup methods. The reason I'm asking is that, if I'm feeling like this and am still taking my bcp, will that affect my pregnancy in any way if I am in fact pregnant? Please answer my question when you can. I don't want to be taking unnecessary medications if I am. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Jennifer :)

I am terribly sorry to hear about your recent loss, may God Bless her little soul :(

To answer your question. The 2 weeks in question where you went without back up controception, most definately could have gotten your pregnant, without a doubt. As stated by your doctor, the birth control takes about a month to get in your system. If at all, you ovulated within that 2 week time frame, you are open to get pregnant.

Now, all the symptoms you described, are definatly sounding pregnancy related. But here's the clencher. If you are not pregnant, you are definately suffering a major hormonal imbalance, without a doubt. Hormonal imbalances, will completely mimic the symptoms of pregnancy, so it can be really confusing.

Now, the cold symptoms your are feeling, could be just a cold virus. However, it some pregnant ladies, if they have high estrogen levels, they will take cold symptoms.

Now, your pregnancy tests could be coming out negative, because the HCG might be a little to low in your urine to give you an accurate result. However, I think by now you would have had an accuarate result. But if you want to try again, I advise that you do it first thing in the morning when you wake up. The urine in the morning is more concentrate, there for the HCG hormone will be more prominate, and accurate if you are indeed pregnant.

Now, you also could go back to the doctor, and have a BETA HCG blood test done, that conclusively diagnoses pregnancy.

Now, if you are pregnant, its advised that you do come off birthcontrol the moment you find out. Usually, there's not concern with the pill, and being pregnant. But its advised to come off, so hormone function will resume back to normal, to proceed with the pregnancy. The pill, might basically throw off the hormonal process during pregnancy, but there is absolutely no serious affects from taking the pill while pregnant.

If I were you, I would get a blood test, Jennifer. Its conclusive, and would let you know without a doubt, if you are pregnant. Atleast, if you give you peace of mind, and you would know where you stand, without stressing yourself out.

I hope this is of some help, and if you have any more concerns, please dont hesitate to write back.

Thanks for writing :)

-Kristy
