Aspirin and Early Pregnancy: Risks and What to Do

Question
I am about 4 weeks pregnant and I took 2000 milligrams of excedrin migraine not realizing that it had aspirin in it. What should I do and what harm will it have on the baby?

Answer
Dear Laura,

It's very unlikely that taking a single dose of aspirin in early pregnancy will have any harmful affect on the pregnancy. However, aspirin and aspirin-containing products can cause problems for both you and your baby if you take it regularly in normal adult doses while you're pregnant. Just make sure that you read the labels of any and all medications you take beforehand while pregnant. As a general rule, about the only medication that doctors like for pregnant women to take without prior "ok" is acetaminophen (Tylenol).

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
