Nyquil and Pregnancy: Safety & Alternatives for Insomnia

Question
I just found out that I am 4-5 weeks pregnant. I work a night shift job. Prior to being pregnant, I took Nyquil on my days off to have a regular sleep schedule. Knowing that I am pregnant now, I looked at the bottle and it says consult a doctor before using if pregnant.
Is it safe to use the recommended dose or less while being pregnant?
If not, are there any safe medications I can take? I've had insomnia for the last 2 nights. Thank you.

Answer
Every drug in creation has that warning on the label.  It's protection for the manufacturer against lawsuits, not necessarily an indication of any real danger.  While it is recommended that you avoid most pharmaceuticals while pregnant, it's very, very unlikely that you have done any damage.

If you need help getting to sleep and want to avoid the Nyquil, you may want to try some chamomile tea.  You can buy Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea, or there are a number of alternative and organic preparations available at your local health food market.
