Topical Corticosteroids & Pregnancy: Safety & Concerns

Question
Dear Lilly Safley,
I am married and 8 weeks pregnant. I also have very bad ezema. I have suffered from this since I was little. Without medication I stay up iching and get rashes everywhere. I also have to wear long sleves and pants in the summer to cover my arms and legs. I don't feel confident going to the beach with my husband with the rashes on me.  About a few months ago, I began to see a dermatologist that prescribed me Triamcinolone acetonide cream mixed with velvachol (which is a coolent).  My skin has never looked so good.  I still icth from time to time but I put on the cream as soon as I have an itch.  I have used it probably too much in the past couple of months, just because I want to maintain not having the rashes and constant iching. For my first appointment to the OBGYN I told my doctor that I was using that. I told her the name of the medication and everything, she said it would be okay to use.  But when I called my dermatologist to get a refill today, I told them I was preganant and they told me not to use it until I had the baby. I got scared and I feel like I have hurt my baby and caused it deformities by using this cream especially a lot of it.  I'm also upset that my OBGYN didn't tell me not to use it. And if she didn't know what it was, she should of looked it up and then let me know.  My question is have already hurt the baby by using this medication? And what else could I use similar that won't hurt my baby?  Sorry so long.
                        Thank you,
                                  Amy

Answer
HI Amy,
I would call the poison control center and tell them exactly what you are using and you have been using and told your ob and exactly what you told me. They can look it up and tell you more. I suspect everything is allright because most things put on the skin and not internally are not absorbed as quickly into the blood stream if at all. but do call them and let me know.
