Post-Miscarriage Period Delay: What to Expect?

Question
Hi Brenda, thanks for taking the time to read my question. I had a D&C following a missed miscarriage on 2/23/2010. My first period arrived 29 days later, on 3/24/2010, putting me pretty close to my pre-miscarriage cycle (I spotted for a couple of days before the period really started). Now, however, I am on cycle day 30 and there is NO indication that my period is on its way (no spotting, cramping, etc.). I have taken two home pregnancy tests and they were both negative, as expected since we have had only protected intercourse this cycle. Is it normal to have a regular first period after a D&C and then have a late second one? This was my second miscarriage in a row and I honestly don't feel ready emotionally to be pregnant again, so I am hoping that my body is just adjusting after the D&C. Thank you in advance for your help.

Amy

Answer
Dear Amy,

Typically it is the first period after a miscarriage/D & C that is completely unpredictable. But to be honest... I have heard it all through this forum! :) Here's the thing - since you have had only protected sex and have tested negative, you can be almost completely certain that you have not conceived another pregnancy. The most likely cause for this alteration in your cycles is your body trying to adjust to what has gone on in the last couple months. I would suggest that you continue to protect against pregnancy so that you don't have to worry about that and let your body do it's thing. The hormonal balance necessary for regular cycles is a delicate thing and it may just require another cycle or two. If you don't get back into a regular pattern in another couple cycles, give your doctor a call.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well. Sorry for the delay... I'm recovering from surgery.
