QuestionHi. I am 22.5 weeks pregnant with my first child. About 4 weeks ago, I experienced dark brown and light brown spotting (mostly in mucus) which resolved on its own. All was 'smooth sailing' until today. I began to cramp (first on one side, then the other) and bleed more heavily than before. The blood is still brown, but there was more of it, plus some stringy clots in my urine stream. I went to my doctors today and they noted no placenta previa, no infection and also ruled out preterm labor (cervix is still closed/ long). However I don't understand why this is happening. I am still cramping mildly. How worried should I be?
AnswerDear Andrea,
If your doctor has done an ultrasound and ruled out any condition which may cause immediate threats to the pregnancy, then I would not be alarmed.
Bleeding can be a sign of miscarriage but does not mean that miscarriage is imminent. Studies show that anywhere from 20-30% of women experience some degree of bleeding in early pregnancy. Approximately half of pregnant women who bleed do not have miscarriages.
Unless you experience cramping (like strong menstrual cramps) and/or clots or tissue passing with heavier bleeding, I would not be overly concerned. And usually we aren't as alarmed about brown spotting as bright red. However, do keep track of what you experience, jot it down, and note it to your OB doctor at your next visit.
Please be aware that you should never wear a tampon or introduce anything else into the vaginal area such as douche or sexual intercourse if you are currently experiencing bleeding. It is also useful to wear a pad or pantiliner so that you can accurately judge the amount of spotting/bleeding.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well. Sorry for the delay.. I am recovering from surgery and a little slow.
