Pregnancy After Childbirth: Risks & Considerations

Question
Hi, Im 20 years old and I have a 6 month old daughter. I got on birth control right after I had her and I got pregnant about 6 weeks after giving birth. I didnt have any complications with my first pregnancy and I was wanting to know if there was any risks for getting pregnant that soon after giving birth.

Answer
Dear Brittany,

There is some data regarding pregnancies conceived that close together which I will share with you, but keep in mind... the data is for informational purposes and for you to take the knowledge and make adjustments as necessary in order to try and create as healthy an environment as possible from here forward. We can't do anything about what's already done... we can just adjust from here. :)

Researchers found that infants born to women who conceived less than six months after giving birth had a 40% increased risk for being born prematurely and a 61% increased risk of low birth weight, compared with infants born to mothers who waited 18 months to two years between pregnancies. The risk for preterm birth, low birth weight, and small size for gestational age increased by 1.9%, 3.3%, and 1.5%, respectively, each month that the time between pregnancies was shortened from 18 months.

What this means for you is.... eat and live as healthy as possible during your pregnancy, make sure you are taking those prenatal vitamins and getting to your monthly check-ups, and be ready to deliver early (just in case).

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
