QuestionI went to the doctor today to have my ultrasound done, in results of that I was told that my baby has fluid in the brain and that my baby spin didn't close as it should have. She said that it can cause my baby to have spinal bifida or other birth defects. When I asked she said there is nothing I can do to prevent this from further complications and now I'm so worried I'm only 26 and don't know what to do. I'm blaming myself for it.But I want to know if this can be cured within the 3rd trimester, is there any way that the spin can close and everything will be ok. I'm just so worried at this point I don't know what to do!!
AnswerDear Leonka,
If the diagnosis of spina bifida has been confirmed by your OB doctor, there is nothing that can "reverse" the condition. Typically, once the diagnosis is made, there are only a few options for treatment. The main three options available once a fetus with spina bifida is diagnosed are:
-termination of the pregnancy
-intrauterine surgery
-expectant management with closure of the vertebral defect and correction of associated anomalies in the neonatal period
I would strongly encourage you to talk over the options with your doctor, depending upon the severity of the case you are dealing with and your personal situation. Please get all the information you possibly can about this condition and the future treatments of it before making a decision. I would also suggest seeking out any other parents who may have experience with a spina bifida pregnancy/child. They can be very supportive and helpful.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
