IUD Insertion & Hemorrhoid Prevention After Childbirth: What You Need to Know

Question
i was wondering if an IUD could be inserted right after i give birth, or do i have to wait until my first period. and also was wondering if there is any way to avoid the feeling of hemmoroids after the birth. after my first, i didnt get hemmoroids but felt like i did.

Answer
An IUD can be inserted as soon as 10 minutes after you deliver the placenta.  However, early insertions like this have a much higher chance of being expelled as your uterus naturally contracts down to its normal size.  Most doctors, therefore, prefer to wait until your six-week appointment.

Although it is normal for your tissues to be quite swollen and bruised after childbirth, the "hemorrhoid" feeling you had was likely caused by pushing, rather than the passage of the baby.  The standard practice of coached birthing in hospitals, where you are told to hold your breath and count to 10 and push three times during each contraction, is unnecessary, ineffective, and ultimately wasteful.  It can also directly cause hemorrhoids and other pelvic organ prolapses, as the extreme pressure of bearing down for so long weakens the muscles of the pelvic floor.  The best way to avoid this next time is to avoid coached pushing altogether.  Do not allow anybody to tell you when or how to push; instead, wait until your body pushes uncontrollably, and continue to follow that urge.  There may be an interval between when you are fully dilated and when you feel the urge to push.  The urge may build gradually, with little pushes leading into bigger ones.  Both of these are natural patterns that allow your body to regain some energy and learn how to push effectively.  Trust in your body and allow it to be your guide on pushing, and you will likely push less, and may even deliver sooner, than you would with coached pushing.  You should also feel less exhausted and bruised when you are done.

Good luck!
