Postpartum Period Irregularities: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
I gave birth at the end of January and didn't get my first period until the middle of March, which was fine, but I have been on my period ever since then.  Its not heavy, and it will skip a day and then come back for another week.  So I guess my question is should this be something I should be concerned about or will it eventually even its self out?

Answer
Dear Amber,

Your first period after childbirth is dependent upon whether you are breastfeeding or not. Women who are not breastfeeding will usually start menstruating 6-8 weeks postpartum. If you are breastfeeding, you may not menstruate until you wean the baby off the breast. Other women get their period back even though they continue to breastfeed. Every woman/every pregnancy is different. Your first period after childbirth is often much heavier and lasts a little longer than usual before returning to a more normal pattern. However - a month is a little long.  :-)

I would suggest that you call your OB doctor and just let them know what is going on. Depending on the doctor, you may get a couple different answers... either they will tell you to just wait it out and it should return to a normal pattern eventually. OR they will suggest starting you on medication (usually the BCP unless you are breastfeeding which I'll assume you aren't) to get your cycles regulated again.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
