Getting Pregnant After the Pill: What You Need to Know

Question
I have been on the birth control pill for 9 years. My husband and I are thinking about starting a family soon. I have heard that after being on birth control pill for so long, that it may take me a year or longer to get pregnant, but then I've also heard that I could easily get pregnant RIGHT after stopping the pill. What is the correct answer?

Answer
Hello Kristy,
Thanks for your question and hope I can help. I'm not a medical doctor and I always tell people to check with their personal physician.
In my research, I have found that both of those answers you are getting are correct. There is no way of predicting when or if you will get pregnant. I personally was on the birth control pill for almost 10 years and got pregnant pretty soon after going off the pill. I was young at the time. It could depend on your age. There are studies that show that it could take a year or longer to get pregnant after using the pill for a lengthy time. Also, there are women who become pregnant in a short time.  So, I don't know if this has helped but you will just have to see what happens for yourself.
