Hi, I am 32 years old with two children.  I just had a baby 4 months ago and I am not breastfeeding.  I am taking the pill (Desogen) for contraception.  I am experiencing medium flow bleeding while taking these pills.  This is my 2nd month on them.  I have been on Desogen before and never had a problem with bleeding.  Does this mean they are not working?  I also take the drug Effexor XR, do you think it is causing the pill not to work properly?

Thanks.
Answer -
If you take the Desogen regularly (not missing any days), you will not become pregnant, even if you have irregular bleeding. Are you bleeding every day of the month or only having medium flow during your period? The Effexor is used as an antidepressent or anti-anxiety medication and will not interfere with the pill. However, if you continue to have irregular bleeding, you may need a stronger birth control pill. Let me know the date of the first day of your last few periods and how long each period lasted and I can tell you if it is normal or abnormal. A cycle is considered normal if it is 21-35 days from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period. A period is considered normal if you bleed less than 14 days for each period. The pill will always work as far as contraception is concerned.

Actually I had my regular period during the inactive pills like I was supposed to.  Then on the second week of active pills I started bleeding again.  Not just spotting, either.  It makes me think the pill is not absorbing or something.  I do have Crohns Disease and had one foot of my terminal ileum removed, so maybe that is a problem?  I have been on Desogen in the past and never had breakthrough bleeding, especially this heavy.  I've been on it 2 months this time around. Anyway, thanks.

Answer
The Crohn's disease will not have any effect on the pills and, as long as you were not bleeding for more than 14 days, you need not worry. (It does not matter if you were bleeding heavily or lightly). The pills are 99.9% effective whether you had breakthrough bleeding or not. Don't worry.
