Understanding Recurrent Miscarriage and Rh Factor

Question
I have had 3 miscarriages now. After the 2nd one I started looking for answers because the first time I had one the OB told me it was "normal." Anyway I found out that my blood type is 0-positive and my husband's blood type is 0-negative. I found out that I need the Rhogam shot but they don't give that shot till 28 weeks but I'm not making it that far. The first one I was 16 weeks but my baby was only 10 weeks. We found out that we lost it the day of our first ultrasound. We were devastated! I had to have a D&C. I got pregnant about 2 months later and lost it but I just bled it and the last one out. What do you suggest I do? And do you think I need to see a high risk OBGYN?

Answer
Hi Samantha
As far as I'm aware, this only seems relevant if the mother is negative & the father is positive. However, the fact is that you are having recurrent miscarriages and this needs to be investigated further medically.

I would go back to your OBGYN for a chat. Don't let them try and make excuses, leave with the action that YOU want. After the 3rd miscarriage, it's usually protocol that both parents have some tests to see if it's possibly a genetic problem.

You have been through enough, it's time that investigations were carried out.

In the meantime, leave about 3 months before you start trying again. This allows your body to heal. Do see your doctor if you are taking any prescription or non prescription drugs. Take pre-natal vitamins, the normal multi-vits can contain high levels of certain vitamins which may be harmful to a growing baby. Eat well, look after yourself, give up smoking & alcohol if you do either.

Hope this helps.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
