Faint Positive & Bleeding in Early Pregnancy: What Could It Mean?

Question
hi, I am about 6 or 7 weeks pregnant. Every one of my hpt always come up with very faint lines.... i took 12 of them including 3 different brands. Today I woke up bleeding with very mild cramps for about 5 minutes on my left side and the a few very sharp pains felt more in my back on my left side. The bleeding is very noticeable enough to have to wear a pad but defiantly lighter than my normal period....I am very confused.

Answer
Jessica,

A faint positive is still a positive. It is very unlikely the HPTs would give you a positive if there were not traces of hCG in the urine. It is not uncommon for women to experience some bleeding in the early stages of pregnncy.

You could go to your local early pregnancy unit and they may decide to run some blood tests. This will give you a clearer indication of what is happening. Your hormone levels should be rising rapidly at 6 weeks, so they will monitor you on a 24hr/48hr basis and check this is happening. At 6/7 weeks it may also be possible to see the fetal heartbeat so they may decide to give you a scan. However, if this does happen it is important to remember that you may have your dates slightly wrong, and therefore measure small for dates. Also, the fetal heartbeat may not be visable as the usual time scale is between 6-8 weeks, so you need to prepare yourself for that incase it is not yet visable.

Try to rest, and eat healthily to keep your strength up. I hope the bleeding stops soon to help put your mind at rest and that your pregnancy remains healthy.

Kind regards,

Christine
