Question
hi i'm 7 weeks into my pregnancy and I've been having abdomen pain constantly non stop, so yesterday my partner and I decided that we need to go to the ER and see what's going on here. I was there for 9 hours yes 9-hours sorry i won't give and Hospital ER names!@#$% but anywho of course it took them 4-hours to get me in the Ultrasound room, and i couldn't eat until it was all over. so today i go to the bathroom this evening and i see ruby redgrapefruit color on the tissue when i go to wipe which was when before i left the office this evening, so when i get home I go to the restroom again and ys again u see red, the same amount tissue i use the same amount on the tissue, i haven't told my partner, i have to children 13 yr old and a 6 yr old, this will be my third and I'm even more scared i feel like this is my first, like what do i do.. i don't know what is happening.

Answer
Dear Sam,

It may be just a bit of spotting that is occurring. Vaginal bleeding can occur frequently in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and may or may not be a sign of problems. Bleeding can be a sign of miscarriage but does not mean that miscarriage is imminent. Studies show that anywhere from 20-30% of women experience some degree of bleeding in early pregnancy. However, only about half of those miscarry. So - bleeding is more common than you would think in the 1st trimester.

If you are just having a small amount of red color on the tissue when you wipe, that is considered pretty minimal. The signs you really need to be concerned about and report to the doctor if they occur are: active vaginal bleeding, cramping (stronger than menstrual cramps), and clots or tissue passing from vagina.

I assume, since they released you back home, that the ultrasound came back normal. I really think it may just be some benign spotting at this point. A few things I'd like to mention though: First, if you are bleeding, you should always wear a pad or panty liner so that you can monitor how much you are bleeding and what type of bleeding you are experiencing. And second, you should never wear a tampon or introduce anything else into the vaginal area such as douching or sexual intercourse if you are currently experiencing bleeding.

My suggestion is to continue to pay attention to your body and symptoms. If bleeding increases, or you begin to experience the symptoms I noted previously, then I would call your doctor. Otherwise, take it easy, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of good fluids (water, juice, milk), and try not to worry.

I hope I've helped answer your question and I wish you the best. Please don't hesitate to write again with any further questions.
