Post-Miscarriage Period: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I miscarried at 4 weeks in october of this year,NO D & C was required. I think I got my period 3 days ago, but i have been expereincing nausea, a sore back, and slightly swollen ankles, and this morning there was some heavy clotting.
Is this a normal part of your cycle following a miscarriage?
I have been sexually active since the loss... Any suggestions?
Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Amanda
Please could you tell me what date you miscarried & when you stopped bleeding? Also, are you normally regular with your cycles?

This is so I can collect more information so I am able to answer your question more comprehensively.

Kindest Regards
Sarah

Answer
Hi Amanda
These sound like classic hormonal symptoms and as you are regular, it seems that you have had your first cycle on time.
It's not unusual to have a heavy, clotted period after a miscarriage. This may last for another couple of periods until your uterus has had tome to settle and rebuild the lining.
If your bleeding is in any way foul smelling, strange in colour or you have an unusual discharge then this could be a sign of infection. You would then need a visit to the doctor to diagnose and treat this.

I don't think any womans periods go completely back to normal after a miscarriage. A lot of women find that they experience pain and clotting when before they didn't, others may vary in flow and amount.
What you have experienced is what a lot of us have and as long as you show no sign of infection then you need not worry. You know your body, trust it. Follow your instincts too, if you feel that something isn't right then don't be afraid to see your doctor.

Your hormones will still be all over the place and the symptoms should settle, but if you find that they persist then a check up may be a good idea. Do this as soon as possible if they worsen.

I hope this has helped! I wish you a speedy recovery.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
