QuestionDear Sarah,
I started my period yesterday, which was odd - I'm not good at keeping track of my cycle, but I am pretty sure it has come early. Today my period has been heavier than usual. Because it was heavy and early, and I had sex recently, I am wondering if it could have been a miscarriage. How can I be sure?
AnswerHi Jenni
To diagnose a miscarriage you first need to confirm a pregnancy. Unfortunately if a miscarriage is suspected without a confirmed pregnancy, it's difficult to diagnose it without investigation in the form of blood tests. This would detect the presence of hCG (the pregnancy hormone) which can remain in the system for aprox 4-6wks after a loss.
As it's not 'beneficial' to the patient to do this, it would leave one unreliable option which is a pregnancy test. It may pick up remaining hCG, but it could also detect a new pregnancy or it may not pick up the hCG if it is weak or the test isn't very sensitive.
It's not a reliable way and is therefore not recommended.
It's unlikely that you've had a miscarriage. Early miscarriage is normally followed by a late period and bleeding is often fairly normal due to the short amount of time between conception and loss. I can see your concern as miscarriage is often classified with heavy bleeding.
I find it useful to keep a diary of my cycle. I simply mark off the day on a calendar and on my phone. The most important date to keep is the first day of your bleeding as this is often asked for if you have any problems, tests or if you suspect a pregnancy. It can also help if you're thinking of starting some forms of birth control. Keeping accounts of your periods may not seem important, but as you can see it's very useful!
I hope this has answered your question. Please come back if you have any more.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
