Post-Miscarriage Care: When to Seek Further Medical Evaluation

Question
I just had a miscarrige...(7 weeks)...i had great difficulty finding a doctor afterwards, then after going to one i told them that the ER doctor said to make certain they rechecked me to make sure everything came out and all of my blood levels were doing ok.they didn't check anything! nothing, now I'm worried that something may not be as it should.besides the typical pains i feel ok and I'm not bleeding anymore.should i find someone to check everything or just leave it as it is?...I'm so confused!

Answer
Belinda,

I am so sorry to read of your miscarriage.

Many women experience an early miscarriage and dont even know they are pregnant, so never have a follow up test. The female body is very well designed to protect itself, and in the sad times of a miscarriage it makes sure it clears everything naturally, so most women experience no further problems. A miscarriage can have an impact on the menstrual cycle, the body goes through a lot. You may find your periods are a little scattered for the next couple of months, in most cases this is back to normal after about 3 cycles. If you have any pains, beyond the normal period pains, or if you seem to be bleeding heavier than normal, or a lot more frequent then I would find a doctor to examine you. I would also keep a check for any unusual discharge (brown or bad smells), as all these can indicate an incomplete miscarriage and it may be necessary for further treatment. If after 3 cycles your periods are still not returning to normal it may be advisable to seek an doctors opinion. As I stated though Belinda, many women miscarry naturally and do not need any further treatment or check ups.

I hope things physically get back to normal quickly for you to bring you peace of mind.

Kind regards,

Christine
