Testing for Pregnancy After a Miscarriage: When to Test & What to Expect

Question
QUESTION: Hi Pat.
It turns out that the hcg detected by the pregnancy test was indeed from the pregnancy we lost on July 14th. Since then we have been trying again, however, not really counting or keeping track of ovulation, etc. We did have sex on July 20th, July 29th and August 2nd. Hopefully a miracle will happen.
Certainly it is difficult to remain patient during this time, but since I am not sure when my period is expected - when would be an appropriate time to test for pregnancy?

Thank you
Chris

ANSWER: Hi, chris,

Here is a site that will explain how to tell when you have fertile mucus:

http://www.fertilityuk.org/

If you know when you have fertile mucus, you can know when to try for maximum chance. It doesn't work if you are using any kind of hormones, by the way.

Once your period starts again, you should then test a week after you expect your period. If that test is negative, test in another week. If you want to test before your period returns, start testing 3 weeks after your first sex: July 20. That would be about August 10. Then you can test weekly after that, to cover the later incidents. Don't rush it. Your body could use some recovery from your miscarriage.

I hope this helps, and you're welcome. Let me know what happens, and take care.

QUESTION: Hi Pat.
I have not had a period as of yet. I did test this morning and the test was negative. Since I do not want to spend any extra money on pregnancy tests, I figured I would let some time pass before testing again.
I understand every woman is different, however, is there a time when a period is expected after a miscarriage?
After reading online resources, I believe I may have ovulated around July 27-30 as I recall my CM being like egg whites...if this is the case, then shouldn't I have had a period already? or if pregnancy occured, a positive test should show?

Thank you again for all of your help and advice. It is appreciated.
Chris

Answer
Hi, Chris,

Sorry for the delay. There's no definite time when periods will resume.

Let's say you ovulated on July 27. Your period should have started two days ago. If you ovulated on the 30th, it might start tomorrow. That's if my math skills are up to par today. If you had sex during that period, and ovulated during that period, pregnancy could happen, though it isn't a 100% chance. If you did get pregnant, you will probably be able to test in about a week, and get an accurate reading, or try again the week after that. You probably wouldn't get a positive today, even if you ovulated on the 27th, and in any case, you would have been fertile for another couple of days, so I think you're about a week too soon testing.

You're welcome. Good luck!
