Understanding Low Platelet Counts After a Viral Infection: Is It Normal?
QuestionMy daughter age 14, had a viral infection for around 10 days, her symptoms were headache, fever, and body aches. after two visits to the Dr. lab test were done and the only abnormal result was her platelet count which was 100. Her Md. told me not to worry because this happens often with viral illness and he would repeat the cbc in around 3 wks. To your knowledge is this a normal happening?
AnswerHi Jennifer. I agree with your daughter's doctor. When the body is fighting an infection, it is common for there to be a variation in platelet count. When she's feeling better the platelet count should return to normal. If not, then the doctor will probably do further testing to determine a possible cause for her low platelet count.
