Muscle Loss on a Very Low-Calorie Diet: A Nutrition Expert's Perspective

Question
I have been doing a high protein, low carb, low fat, under 400 cal/day diet for a couple months. Is it possible to prevent muscle loss by doing aerobics, yoga and weights? Thank you for your time.

Answer
I think you'll undoubtedly lose muscle mass because of the low calories yoo're eating.  400 cal a day is not enough to sustain your basal metabolic rate, and your body will take what it needs from muscle.

I would suggest a more reasonable calorie intake of around 1600 cal a day with increased activity like you mention. You may lose weight with the diet you're on, but in my opinion, it will not necessarily promote the degree of health you're looking for.
