Low Heart Rate in Newborn: Understanding Potential Causes & ICU Monitoring
QuestionAt two days old my first born grandaughter has been placed in ICU as it was noticed that she turned blue while attempting to feed. She has had difficulty since birth nursing, falling asleep after a few sucks. Since in ICU they are monitoring her heart rate as it decreases to under 70 frequently which is a concern. Via testing so far, she has "better than fine" oxygen in her blood. There is no brain damage. [The labor was difficult and they used a vacuume to help extract her.] The doctors seem to be leaning towards infection, though not all tests are in about her heart. They have said that infection was not passed from mother to baby. Since being put on antibiotics her color is much better. Little to go on, but looking for any info or support you may be able to offer. I'm concerned about the low heart rate. Thanks so much. ~Grama
AnswerCritical care treatment for newborns is tough because they can't say what is wrong... the low heart rate could be from an infection and the turning blue could be from infection also. If not, usually newborns grow out of the turning blue when eating thing quickly... it has to do with coordinating breathing and eating together..... so hang in there
