QuestionI was diagnosed with polycythemia vera 3 1/2 weeks ago. At the time, my hemoglobin was 21.9, and my hematacrit was 65, and platelet count was 584. I have since had 6 phlebotomies, and numerous blood tests. As of today, my hemoglobin wasdown to 15, my hematacrit 45.but my platelet count is up to 714. I am extremely tired all of the time, and get light headed if I overdo. Is the platelet count something I should worry about? Thanks!
AnswerHi Dale. The high platelet count comes with the polycythemia vera. Even though your hemglobin and hematocrit are back to normal, your platelet count can still be high. Polycythemia is the increase in production of blood cells - mainly RBCs (red blood cells) and platelets. I'm sure your doctor will monitor your blood counts closely for awhile.
