I have a 17 year old daughter who has a low hematocrit. She is otherwise healthy. Her pediatrician said to improve her diet. I also have had a borderline hematocrit all my life. Even with iron tablets and diet, mine remains around 35 to 36. Hers is around the same number. I have given her suggestions to improve her diet. Do you have any suggestions that might help?
Answer -
What are your and her hemoglobin electrophoresis test results?
We have never had one nor had this test suggested. What is this and what will it tell me?
AnswerIt will tell you if either or both of you have genetic reasons for the low hematocrit and if so the hematocrit is normal for you, so not to worry.
Thallasemia, sickle cell disease are just two of the hemoglobinopathies which have low hematocrits.
What is your monocyte count or %?
