Low Sperm Count & Fertility: Understanding Your Options
QuestionAge: 25
Children: None
Date of my last menstrual period: April 23, 2004
If my husband has low sperm count, is there any hope of getting pregnant? What I mean is, do we have to go to a specialist because of the low sperm count to get pregnant? We have been together for years and we haven't been taking care of ourselves. Does the semen have to be inside you for a certain amount of time? I feel dumb for asking these questions, but any information will be helpful. Thank you.
AnswerIf the sperm count is low, your husband may be suffering from a "varicocele" which can be corrected (sometimes surgically). An abnormal semenanalysis certainly warrants a consultation with a urologist and often is treatable. Sometimes, even with a low sperm count, you can become pregnant. Remember, you only need one sperm to fertilize an egg. It just has to be at the right place at the right time of the month. Once he ejaculates inside your vagina, the sperm will be filtered through your cervix into your uterus and they will travel up through your fallopian tubes to try to meet the egg (that is waiting at the end of one tube). You do not have to stay in any position for any length of time. Once he ejaculates, the process is automatic. Good Luck.
