Irregular Periods & Infertility: What to Do?

Question
Hi!
I am 34 yrs old, been trying to concieve for almost a year. Until about a year ago, I had clockwork, 28 day cycles my entire life (since starting my period). Then they changed to 31-32 day cycles, the last 2 have been 39 and 36 consecutively. I am day 8 of my cycle, my period was light, heavy, spotting brown, spotting brown, done. (which is a little light for me)
My breasts are still somewhat sore, not as bad and my cervix has been soft and high for the past few days, mucus is somewhat creamy and yellow. What is going on? I check my cervix and mucus almost daily but do not temp due to erratic wake up times.

Answer
Hello,

Your periods could be somewhat erratic due to hormonal changes that occur as you age, and it is normal to have your period fluctuate somewhat.  However, given that yours is fluctuating more significantly and you've been trying to conceive for close to a year, I would suggest asking your doctor to do some tests to check your hormone levels and make sure your fallopian tubes are open.  Your ob/gyn can usually do this basic fertility workup or you can self-refer to a reproductive endocrinologist.  You may not be ovulating on the days you think you are, or your ovulation may not be happening correctly.  This can be checked with bloodwork and ultrasound.  Good luck!
