X-rays and Fertility: Potential Impact on Egg Health - Expert Advice

Question
QUESTION: hi there,

i recently did hsg in early Jul 08 to check for block tubes & etc.  Gynae proclaim all is clear and no problem.  Hsg is performed as i had 3 iuis with no success.

i was about to proceed with IVF in Jul 08 (this month) when my doctor advised to do the IVF in Aug 08 as i have just had xray scan.

my question is this.. while trying to conceive, does xray scan affect the eggs?

i am due for a medical check up which involves chest xray in Aug 08.  will it be advisable to start my IVF in Sep 08 instead?

ANSWER: Hi Mimi,

Thank you for your question.  Where are  you writing from?

I think your doctor is being overly cautious.  The amount of radiation used in current machines is minimal and does not affect your ovaries or your eggs.  If you underwent radiation therapy for cancer (high does radiation) that is another matter.  HSG and Chext x-ray use very minimal radiation.  I would not have delayed your IVF cycle, however, it does not hurt to be cautious.

I hope that answers your question.

Answer
Hi again Mimi,

Thanks for the reply.  It intrigues me that these letters are coming from all over the world.  I think you are the furthest away so far.  I'm in California.
