Managing Asthma & Upper Respiratory Infections: A Patient's Experience

Question
I have been having problems with an upper respiratory infection for about 20 days now.  Because it has triggered some asthma symptoms, my doctor increased my Advair dosage from the 100/50 to the 500/50.  I have been on this for about 20 days.  Last week because I was still having problems, he put me on a Prednisone dose pak for six days (4 mg) for the asthma symptoms and Zithromax for the infection.  I took the last dose of Prednisone on Saturday. It is now Tuesday and I'm still having just as much of a problem.  My peak flows normally are about 550.  Now they are running between 400 and 450, making it uncomfortable to breath.  I feel like I have a 20 pound weight sitting on my chest.

I can't get in to see my doctor until Thursday.  Any suggestions in the meantime?  What will the next step be?  I've never had problems with my asthma that increasing the Advair didn't fix.  I have adult onset asthma and I'm 45 years old.

Thank you.

Answer
Any suggestions in the meantime? With the trouble you are having you would be correct in going to the ER to get a quick assessment of your status and make the appropriate changes the doctor may not be able to do as an outpatient.

What will the next step be? I would suspect you have pneumonia or at least bronchitis which may be worsened by the gastric reflux disease that usually causes it. OK?
