Infections & Fertility: Understanding Bacterial Bladder Issues in Men

Question
Hi. I'm 31 years-old male trying to conceive. I have neurogenic bladder
problem with problem voiding the urine. As a result, I have pseudomonas
infection in the bladder that is colonized in my bladder. My urology doctor
decided to not treat it after seeing the bacteria come back after antibiotics
and also, it seems that it doesn't do any harm to my other organs (they said
it's colonized).
Another complication is that b/c of neurogenic bladder, my bladder neck
muscle isn't fully contracted when I ejaculate, so urine, and the bacteria in it,
comes out with semen when I ejaculate (I can also tell this by the yellowish
color and smell). I'm trying to get my wife pregnant now, and worried whether
the bacteria in the semen would have any negative effect on fertility, my wife
health and baby's health (any chances of birth defects due to this). Your
answer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Kevin,

Your pseudomonas colonization is a problem, and can affect the sperm by killing them off.  It won't cause birth defects, however.  The best treatment option for you would be to undergo insemination with a good sperm wash technique, not swim-up, or IVF with ICSI.
