Urinary Difficulties During Pregnancy: Causes & When to Worry

Question
Dr. Rappaport,
Thank you for reading my question. I am a 26 year old. I have had 2 live births, one miscarriage, and am currently in the 10th week of my fourth pregnancy. In the past week or two I have had trouble urinating after lying down for 2 or more hours. Nothing will come out unless I push and even then I have trouble. But after being up for 30 minutes or so I have no trouble at all. My doctor does not seem concerned about this, but I'm very uncomfortable when I get up in the mornings because my bladder is full and I can't relieve myself after awaking. I have never had this problem before. Is this a normal complaint coming from a pregnant woman and what exactly is going on in there? Thanks so much for your time and opinion!

Answer
Right now, your uterus is pressing on your bladder and causing you the difficulty in urination. Try urinating several times during the night, so as to not allow the bladder to fill up too much. After you reach 16 weeks, or so, the uterus will start to grow into your abdomen (away from your pelvis and away from your bladder) and you should have less difficulty. When you stand up, the uterus is shifted off the bladder and the urine can be released easier. Be patient. It will get better.
