Upper Arm & Shoulder Injury: Seeking Medical Advice
QuestionHello Charles, I have an injury involving my shoulder and upper arm.I had an accident on my trail bike a year ago. When I fell I heard a crunch and my right arm felt rubbery and weak. I immediately went through some kind of shock for about 20 mins. When that was over I got up and drove home in my car. A few days later I finally got the courage to see a doctor and got an x-ray of my shoulder and was told my rotator cuff was destroyed but they found no sign of breakage. My concern is in the area approx. 5 inches below my shoulder where the bicep is. It almost feels broke, but I'm deathly scared that I'll need sugery. If I dont get treatment what could I be facing as far as any disability in the future? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.Thnx. P.S. I am a fairly healthy 23 yrs old.(if that means anything to situation.)
AnswerHi Warren,
I am a little surprised that nothing was done for your Rotator Cuff at the time if it was "destroyed". You don't mention any dysfunction that you now have (weakness/decreased or painful range of motion). In as much as you are now having symptoms of some kind and the previous injury appears severe, I would see an Orthopaedist and see about having an MRI done to better assess the tissue in and around the shoulder joint. You are not obligated to have any surgery, but if the MRI suggests a deteriorating process that could leave you with a less than useful arm, I'd strongly consider surgery if it is suggested.
