Persistent Throat Issues After Pneumonia: Causes & Relief

Question
Dear sir,

I was affected by pneumonia 3 month before. I took azithromycin 500 mg once a day and cefpodoxime 400 mg twice a day for 7 days but they did not work. Then I was admitted to a hospital to give antibiotic by injection. That was of 4.5 gram antibiotic. This controlled the fever and I was discharged after taking 15 doses.

Now I always feel odd in my throat. It is always reddish and Slightly swelling. I have been taking decongestant tablets thrice a day which contains 500 mg paracetamol, 10 mg phenylepherine HCL B.P. & 7.5 mg Pheniramine maleate B.P. But the problem is not improving. I want your suggestions, Which medicine is suitable for me ?

Answer
A,

With the series of several rounds of antibiotics I would be concerned with yeast or fungal overgrowth in your mouth/throat (candida/thrush).  This can be treated with appropriate antifungal therapy, but cultures or KOH slide must confirm dx.

Additionally, Infectious Mononucleosis (Mono) can present with pneumonia like symptoms, but it is a viral infection (EBV) and can cause a pharangitis.. this must be ruled out also usually by a blood test.

Seek guidance from your doctor regarding both of these issues, don't self treat.
