Understanding Upper GI Issues After Hip Replacement Surgery

Question
Hello,
I was wondering if you could give me some advice? I am a 43 female and I had a hip revision done on April 18,2007 due to the hip replacement coming loose. The revision was not successful due to impingement, I had another revision on July 20, 2007. I can not take any form of pain killers so I loaded up on Aleeve.( like 12 a day)I know that is too many but I really did not have a choice. Ok, when I got out of the hospital, my stomach hurt. I thought I had a ulcer. So I started taking prilosec. It did not help so after 3 weeks I went in and the doctor gave me protonix (40 mg) and ordered an upper GI. My question is this, my test is tomorrow and I feel the meds are helping. The pain is not all gone but is much better. Would it not be better to cancel the Upper GI and see how the meds keep working? What else would they do if it was a bleeding ulcer other than the same meds I am on? I really hate to waste people's time in having a test and I am on the mend. Thank you so much for your time. Deb

Answer
Would it not be better to cancel the Upper GI and see how the meds keep working? usually best to get the test since sometimes the meds help partially or even temporarily

What else would they do if it was a bleeding ulcer other than the same meds I am on? do biopsy to be sure it is not infected with H pylorii or even cancer
