Ankle Pain After Running: Causes, Symptoms & When to See a Doctor
QuestionOn March 6th I was running with my teen age son and was trying to run faster then him I felt a sharp pain in my ankle. The pain was mainly below my ankle bone and would radiate up into my toes. Figuring that I had just sprained it I rested it,elevated it and iced it. It never really swelled much just a small amount and I can walk on it, though it is uncomfortable. The pain still continued so I made an appointment with my family physician last week.He did x-rays and said the ankle did not appear to be broken though I did have a few bone fragments that he is assuming was from a prior injury( I don't remember ever injuring this ankle before) He said go home, he gave me some exercises to do to strengthen my ankle and to return if it isn't better in two weeks. The pain is increasing and now hurts around my whole ankle and into the other side of my foot. Any suggestions on what might be going on? My husband wants me to go see an orthopedist but I don't want to overreacted if is simply a sprain. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Answerif the xray is normal typically the ortho is not going to be helpful but since it has been going on 5+ weeks now, that might be a reasonable next step... typically these get better over 2-4 weeks with rest, anti-inflammatories unless there is another issue such as gout, etc. I would head back to the family doctor and get it re-evaluated, but ortho may be the next step.
