Foot Pain & Swelling: Causes, Symptoms & What to Do

Question
Hello...  I am 35 yrs old....no past history of any medical conditions.   I went to my Family doc. because I was having trouble with my feet.  I wore some loose fitting sandals, and the next morning, I could hardly walk when I got out of bed.  My feet are swollen(especially ankles on both feet) and the rest of my foot is very painful.   There are bruises (reddish color) on the sides of my feet and heel and alot of pain on the tops of my feet by my third, fourth and fifth toe.   It feels like a deep bone bruise.    At first the pain was mostly in my heel and radiated forwarded, but now my leg muscles are very sore.

My doctor took Xrays of both feet, nothing found.  He thinks that I have plantar fasciitis.  I am wearing a shoe insert that is hard plastic that I purchased from a foot/shoe store.  That does help with the pain in the heel, but I have no relief from bone pain in foot.  I have iced my feet for 3-4 nights in a row, but the next morning, everything is stiff and can hardly get out of bed.     My wife is worried that there is some underlying cause.  If someone has plantar fasciitis, does that cause your foot to swell and be painful in the areas that I discussed?  Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Answer
The plantar fascia is the tough hide under the skin, attaching the forefoot bones to the heel... when that becomes inflamed, it is a miserable condition.... it sounds like you are doing the right treatments..... ice it down for 20 min in the evening, the heel cups or shoe inserts and the anti-inflammatories, like Motrin and those meds, then give it some time... I measure response by the week, not by the day.... I usually tell people that they will have to do this for at least 2 weeks to get a good response.  Your symptoms sounds consistent with plantar fasciitis and you will have to give it another week or two.

Hope this helps...
