Question -Dear Doctor,
What is "the gate theory" to which you refer in #2? In #5 you seem to be saying that accupunrure needles are somehow electric. Is that so and do they puncture the skin? I think my group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bookdoctorsandeditors might interest you. There are a Lot of ecletic, humorous sites there and some nice people. You might take a look. It's an open group.
Thank you,
JB :)

Dear Dr, Aukerhan,
This is JB with the stress fracture. I was looking for your archived answers, couldn't find them, and thouht I'd ask you a ligter-than-usual question, for me at least.
Some people - not medical - have suggested I try accupunture, but all fthe MDs I've asked just sort of shrug with a questioning look when I've asked their opinion, but news reports make it sound good. I saw an accupunturist/anesthesiologist once, got a helpful massage from his assistant, but resisted the needles.
I was there about my painful, hypersensirive left side, not my right side that's fracturing. The accupuncturist was Asian and wanted to stick needles(I've been told don't hurt normal people) in my hypersentive side at the places fhat hurt most. With no real belief it'd work and with his lack of interest in my medical history and hypersensitivity to the slightest touch, I declined the offer.>> Questions:
1. Does accupunture work?

2.How?
2 1/2. Have fthere been double blind studies to test it?
3.do fthe needles ever hurt?
4. How long are treatments effective?
5. If accupuncture works, wouldn't accupressure also work and why not try accupressure first, if only to see if that hurts or is effectuve?
If you're short on time, I'm mostly interested in #5 above and how effective you think accupuncture would be on mt TBI-affecrws left side and relieving the stress feacture pain on my right. Is it one of fthose things you have to believe in for them to be effective?
Thank you very much. When I asked a follow-up last time, it seemed to prevent me from thanking and rating you.I hope all the 10s registered. That's why i'm trying to find your archivd answers. If the 10s didn't go through, maybe I could give fhem to you there and keep you easy to find for everyone.
Thank you again,
JB
Answer -
Questions:
1. Does accupunture work? Yes.

2 1/2. Have fthere been double blind studies to test it? Yes
3.do fthe needles ever hurt? Occasionally but not like you current pain
4. How long are treatments effective? one week at a time for the fist 12 then one month for the next twelve then sometimes permanent.
5. If accupuncture works, wouldn't accupressure also work and why not try accupressure first, if only to see if that hurts or is effectuve? No, since it is only substituing pressure for your pain not elect stim for your pain.
6. Is it one of those things you have to believe in for them to be effective? Not really but disbelieving is a bad thing for any kind of help or relationship. RighT/
