Gallbladder Removal Complications: Liver Infection & Pancreatitis - Patient Story

Question
on 4-25-06 I had my gallbladder removed.  The surgeon neglected to clamp the valve to my liver, after 3 days in the hospital in unimaginable pain they did a catscan and found my liver covered with infection/abscess. 2 tubes were inserted to drain the infection, in the meantime the entire right side of my abdomen was soaking in bile.  2 weeks later 2 more tubes were inserted to drain the left side. I developed pancreatitis.  It was severe.  I spent a total of 42 days in the hospital.  I am still in severe pain. My stomache swells and gets hard whenever I eat or drink.  I have lost 30 since 4-25-06.  I have to wear a morphine patch to control the pain.  Catscans and MRI's and X-rays and bloodwork all come back normal.  The doctor thinks maybe still pancreantitis and peritonitis. What is peritonitis and what do I need to know and do?  I am very sick. What are we missing? I am unable to live a normal life do to the pain and I have had to go to my local ER for pain when I tell them about the surgery and the pain they seem to act like there is no way that the surgery went wrong like that and I am lying just to get narcotics, although I tell them I have pain pills,  I need a cure not pain pills. Now that I have to patch The pain is not as bad 50% of the time.

Answer
Hi Trudy,
I apologize for the late response. It's been a very busy holiday week end.
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the Pancreas that cam cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and problems with digestive enzyme production and sugar control. Peritonitis is an inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity. This can cause pain, nausea, omitting and loss of appetite. You can do nothing about either of these. You probably recieved many antibiotics and these could have casued a problem with altertion in the normal bowel flora. You probably should be on  digestive enzymes and some kind of gut flora re-establishing medication. I would approach your doctor about these things.
