Pulmonary Embolism Recovery: Timeline & INR Levels - A Patient's Experience

Question
I was just diagnosed just a little over a week ago with pulmonary embolisms.  I am 19 years old, not a weekly smoker, and had no family history of blood clots.Although, I was on the birth control pill. That's the only explanation the doctor's can come up with as the reason for the blood clots. I was wondering how long it takes a person to level out after being put on blood thinning medication? I was fine when leaving the hospital, then a few days ago my INR level was 7.6.  Warfarin is the medication I am currently taking.

Answer
I am so sorry to hear about this.  Birth control pills have so many bad side effects and to be your age with blood clots is very upsetting to me.

It may take some time to adjust your levels since it is going to take time for the medications to be completely gone from your body.

Coumadin (warfarin) is the drug of choice, please just keep on top of this until you are level.

There is no magic answer.  Depends on how your body reacts with the meds.  In the mean time please be careful with bumps and bruises and cuts.

Let me know how everything turns out.
