Understanding Blood Types & Anemia Risk During Pregnancy

Question
I have a 4 year old boy and when he was born he had a rare type of anemia and had to have a blood transfusion. I am now pregnant again and am scared it will happen again as we nearly lost our first born. There is also a problem of what blood group I am as with my first born my notes said I was A2 positive and with this pregnancy my notes say im A positive I don't know if the 2 stands for anything it just seemed funny that the notes were'nt written the same. My partners blood type is A positive and I was wandering if that mine and his blood is so simular it ould have been the problem with our first born. Thanks Laura.

Answer
Hello Laura. Since both your blood types are essentially the same, I doubt very  much that they are the problem. The "2" doesn't mean anything as far as I know. You need to discuss with your dr. what the anemia in your son was caused by. It could be something that is not likely to happen again, or it could be something genetic. Get copies of the medical records and get them explained. All the best- Cheri.
