QuestionI had a surgical abortion 9 weeks ago. I had light bleeding for about three
week after the procedure, then had no bleeding for another 3 weeks.
Then on the 6th week I started having what I thought was my period. I
was bleeding for about 7 days, and it had started to slack off but I stood
up and started gushing blood, soaked through my underwear, a chair, and
a towel in about 5 minutes. I went to the ER, and the gave me an exam,
took my blood and urine and told me everything seemed fine. My uterus
felt good, and my blood counts were good. The bleeding stopped while at
the ER. They told me to follow up with my gyno the next day. I did, and he
also gave me an exam, an and ultrasound, an checked my blood. He said
my hcg was normal so there could be no products of conception left over,
my ultrasound showed a small blood clot and my uterine walls were still
thick, but he said that was also normal because I was 12 weeks when I
had the abortion. He said my uterus felt fine. I continued to spot brown for
about 2 weeks, and started having bad cramps so I got scared and went
back to the ER, where the checked me out again and said everything was
fine. I've been so scared I'm going to bleed again and that something is
wrong even though all the doctors say I'm ok. I'm terrified to have a period
and I worry everyday. I've been so scared I'll bleed to death or something.
Does it sound like I'm ok, or should I be worried. The doctors seem to act
like that gush of heavy bleeding I had was normal, but I almost passed
out from it, and I don't want it to happen again! Will I be normal again?
AnswerHi Megan,
I understand that you are scared. Not being prepared for al those unhappy events.
Now, after a 12 week abortion bleeding and periods tend to be, and also stay unpredictable and irregular for sometimes even months.
Docs say that your bloodcount is normal, so I am not frightened. Remind that you did not have your period for 12 weeks so there is blood enough.
Brown blood is old blood. The uterus is a self cleaning organ -same happens when you have your period.-. Sometimes cloths form. These are pressed out which causes the cramps. You will not bleed to death, guarantee.
Just have patience and no unprotected sex.
Bye for now,
Dr Shan
