Persistent Hoarseness: Causes, Treatments, and When to See a Doctor
QuestionI have been hoarse for the last seven days. No sore throat, no congestion, just hoarse. This has happened in the past and last over a month. My internist referred me to an ENT so said it was caused by a combination of my allergy medicine (Claritin and Flonase) and my asthma medicine (Advair). He gave me a prescription for Guaifenesin DM (1200 mg/60 mg) to "counteract it". I have been taking it twice a day for the last week, but no change. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!
Answerhoarseness has a few causes.... gastric reflux, esp some acid coming up at night. Also allergies, as you are treated for.... I would check a mini cat scan of sinus'. Also, could be a mild fungal infection from the advair use... the steroid sometimes suppresses immune response and that can occur. Mycelex troche, or nystatin oral suspension if your doc thinks that could be a cause. Overall, it is usually a mild upper respiratory infection or allergies though..... good luck with it
