Understanding Sudden Chills: Causes and When to Worry

Question
Hello, Dr. Borucki,

The other night, my boyfriend woke up with a bad case of chills.  He had no other symptoms of a problem.  The room was quite warm.  He shivered awhile, fell back to sleep and by the middle of the night was fine again.

The only possible factors we can think of were that he'd had a couple of drinks on an empty stomach (about four hours prior to the episode)(but, followed by a big dinner) and had had sex about a half hour before; he'd also spent the previous several days working very hard, long hours on a project for work (on computer) and had been stressed.

We'd appreciate any insight you may have!  Thank you!

Answer
chills sounds like an impending viral infection or early strep throat... I suspect other symptoms will follow over the next 24 hours and then treat the symptoms and wait it out.......  other weirder things are prostate infections, GI infections but he will have symptoms that point to that.
