Fosamax Side Effects: Abdominal Pain & What to Do

Question
I just started taking Fosamax and about an hour after taking it I got a horrific pain in my stomach.   I thought it would go away but it lasted two days.  Is this something that I will experience every week when I take the Fosamax?

Answer
Dear June,

Fosamax definitely can cause abdominal pain.  It is one of the major side effects.

I am assuming that you are taking the weekly 35 or 70mg dose?

The most important issue with Fosamax is esophagus problems.  It is so very important to stay upright for at least one hour after taking the Fosamax, and following directions TO THE LETTER.   If you ever have throat or chest pain after taking Fosamax, call your doctor right away.

The abdominal pain may ease.  Perhaps, if you are on the 70mg, your physician may cut you back to 35mg.

In any respect, before taking the next dose, please let your physician know that you had abdominal pain lasting for two days.  Any pain that is "horrific" should not be overlooked.

I hope this answered your question.  Please do not hesitate to let me know if you would like more information, or with anything else I may help you.

Best wishes always,

Andrea
