Superficial Blood Clot After Travel: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Question
I traveled in May of this year to Greece (approximately 9 hour flight) and returned at the beginning of June.  I was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot just behind my knee a week or two after I returned from my trip.  I'm on oral contraceptives (Diana-35) and at the time of flying I may have been dehydrated as I had been ill and not been drinking much fluids.  I was prescribed 650 mg Novasen per day and I took it for 20 days but stopped as I was experiencing nose bleeds and stomach aches (I was prescribed 30 pills in total).  The blood clot got smaller but did not disappear.  In mid August I started to take the remainder of my Novasen as the clot was still there and I would like to go on another vacation in October. If I still have the blood clot (very small) can I go on a 10 hour flight or is this dangerous?  I also plan to change my oral contraceptive in two weeks to a lower dose estrogen containing pill (Alesse).

Thanks so much for your help!

Answer
I would talk to your doctor and consider some type of anti-coagulation for the trip....

Novasen is basically aspirin.... there are several others that can be used and you should consider getting off the birth control pills.... from your description, it sounds like there were other predisposing factors but these can be very serious.....
