QuestionI'm a 15 year old girl. About a month ago i was on my period and I'm not sure if i removed my tampon or not, i cant feel anything but I'm still worried as it could lead to TSS and I have had some of the symptoms. I came on my period again today, is it possible its still inside me and what would you recommend that i do?
AnswerDear Shona,
The vagina is a hallow tube that leads to the cervix. The opening to the cervix leads to the uterus and is only large enough to let sperm in or menses out. In other words a tampon could not go through the opening of the cervix and enter the uterus.
Therefore, you have one of two options. You can either check your vagina yourself for the tampon, or you can make an appointment with your physician for an examination.
If you decide to perform a self check, the easiest way is to squat over the toilet and insert your middle finger inside your vagina. It is approximately 6-8 inches in length and the inside will feel ribbed. The cervix is at the end of the vagina and feels soft and round with an indentation in the center. If you do not feel anything outside of what I described, you do not have a tampon in you. If, however, you feel anything other than what I described, you can remove it with your fingers. Do NOT put anything inside your vagina except your fingers to remove the tampon. If you are unable to do it by yourself, seek the help of a medical professional.
Good luck!
