What to Do If You Suspect a Tampon is Retained - Expert Advice

Question
My 13 year old daughter just started using tampons.  She remembers putting a tampon in in the morning, but doesn't remember taking it out.  She's not sure if it's still in there.  What's your advice?  Thanks.

Answer
Dear Carol,

If a tampon is retained, it is a potential source for infection. First, she will need to try and feel as high as possible into her vaginal canal for the string or the tampon to see if she can feel any part of it. Otherwise, she will need to be taken in for a vaginal exam to make sure there is not one left inside that has become lodged too high to feel. Tell her not to be embarrassed at all. This happens much more often than you would think, even with older females who simply forget they are there until a terrible odor and discharge begins and they have a raging infection!

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
