QuestionHow long after giving birth (naturally) can i expect to have my first period? my baby is 6 weeks old on friday and not yet menstruated, my partner and i have been using condoms as contraception and im not too trusting of them and am a little worried.
AnswerHonestly, everyone is different. Generally, however, it can take as long as 10 weeks before your body gets back on track and you start menstruating regularly again. If you're breastfeeding, this can also delay your periods (though it does come with a slight bit of protection against pregnancy as well). If you period does not come by the time your baby is 3 months old, and you are not breastfeeding, you may want to ask your health care provider about going on hormonal birth control to get your body back into rhythm.
If you haven't seen your doctor or midwife yet and they haven't given you the "all-clear" to resume sexual relations, I highly recommend you do that before having sex again. It can be dangerous to have sex before the uterus has healed. Aside from infection, air bubbles can get into the bloodstream and cause death. So I always strongly recommend that you get a go-ahead from your health care provider before resuming sex after childbirth.
Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.
Best wishes,
Helen =)
