Understanding Breast Lumps: What to Do After an Ultrasound

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have a lump in the upper part of my right breast that is hard immovable and its about the size of a marble but it feels rougher then a marble with a kid of like pit/dent in it. It has been there for at least a year and a half. It does not cause me pain. I had in looked at by an ultrasound about 15 months ago and they said they could see something and that it looked scary unless they took the saturation off or something like that. Should I get it relooked at? The radiologist said if I was concerned to get a surgeon to look at it. What do you think?

ANSWER: Definitely! You want to know what it is - otherwise you would not have asked me. And it should be established what it is for the sake of your own safety and health! If ultrasound scanning did not show anything at that time you should have a mammography done now as well as a new ultrasound scan and an MRI breast scan. A needle biopsy of the lesion should also be done. Since you can feel it by touch it can probably be done as a thin/fine needle aspiration biopsy guided by touch as well. If that is not available where you are a surgical biopsy should be done. If there has been no change in 15 months the risk of cancer is probably small but we should make that certain so these things should be done! Good luck!

QUESTION: The only thing they offered in my area was ultrasound so thats what they did. They did say they could see the lump but the radiologist didnt figure it was a cause for concern because once she took the saturation (i think thats what she called it) off she could no longer see it or it looked less concerning to her. By the way I described the shape/texture and position of it what would you assume it to be?
P.S. I will be getting it looked at just want to know your opinion.

Answer
I do not think ultrasound alone is good enough for a sure diagnosis on its own! If they could see it on ultrasound then you can also do an ultrasound guided needle biopsy of it. I think that SHOULD be done! THEN we will KNOW what it is! Good! Good luck! Thanks!
